THM is mostly associated to a thumbnail of video image file. Thumbnails are small images representing the real image file or content. THM is also associated with the configuration file for OpenOffice installation kit. Editing thm files for OpenOffice application is strongly discouraged. Instead, users may need to reinstall the application to resolve issues with thm files.

Thumbnails are created to provide initial preview of a file without actually opening it. This allows the system to use minimal resources in providing previews rather than opening the file totally. Some of these files are video clips created through digital cameras or video cameras. Cameras such as the Sony Cyber-Shot series create these files.

Several thumbnail files are only accessible to applications that created them. Metadata of these files may contain information such as time and date when the file was last modified, type of camera used in taking the images, and file size.

There are no known threats involve with thm files. However, some virus may damage thm files or may actually contain thm extension on the filename. This includes the Constructor.DOS.THM.152 virus listed on the archives of one reliable virus list over the Internet.

THM files can be renamed to .jpg extensions and be opened using popular imaging software applications such as Adobe Photoshop and Fireworks. Plain .thm files can be viewed using Windows Picture and Fax viewer.
